On #TwitterMigration and Grief

I’ve read about fears some Mastodon folks are experiencing with the influx of Twitter people. I’m doing my best to hold space for that experience, be respectful of unfamiliar norms, and encourage others accordingly.

I want also to hold space for the mourning of people coming from Twitter and ask that we receive the same grace. Contrary to its reputation here, Twitter has been a community of support for me and many of my followers.

Change always involves loss 💜

Remember folks, DM's on mastodon are sent in plaintext, and are neither encrypted nor private - the sysadmin of your server instance can see / browse them. if you want secure communications use signal etc...

@WhatYouMcCallit The fediverse is about cooperation... with me... so do what I say or gtfo.

@Pat @antares

Thank you! That is sane, reasonable, and something I'm more than happy both to use as a general practice and as a reference for some "rando dude not even on my instance flouting a verified mark, patronizing attitude, and "good vibes." May @leahmcelrath find this useful.

Thank you to @leahmcelrath for keeping these conversations public and continuing to ask questions until you get answers that make sense to you and me both. I don't see either of us here with intent to upset people. But "random dude calling me out for a mild expression of concern demanding a CW" is ... confusing and annoying.

@Pat @antares I'm new, I want to be a good Netizen. I saw where someone just posting something innocuous, at least to me, that long polling lines do not necessarily indicate a huge turnout. After reposting her Twitter comment on the Fedi, she was told it needed a cw, and that the tone should be kept "good vibes" unless a cw is used. Then according to her, the person was offended she "took it to that other social site."

I want some guide I can refer to as "best practices." I need something reasonable I can point to for those occasions when "random dude not even in my instance with a verified flag wants to school me on his good vibes culture." I tend to be very direct, brutally honest, and "good vibes" might not appreciate *my* culture of responding somewhere between "I'll take that under advisement" and "piss off!"

The time for me to figure out "best practices" is definitely before "good vibes" goes flexing on me as some ignorant newb. Thank you for helping me transition from Twitter Hellscape to a place to have conversations with reasonable adults.

A reminder for anyone new to mastodon who might not be happy with some of the racist and bad actors out there on other servers... Just import the fediblock list to your personal blocks and you will be safe from the vast majority of bad actors.

I took all the domains from https://fediblock.neocities.org/ block list and put it in a csv file that can be imported so you can block all hateful ...

@garmark93 @mikmaqpeek my wife just watched it. I'm kinda listening in, but way too busy with far too many things to follow the show properly. I wish I just knew more of the pure, un-fictionalized history.

@reallyedbrown Ah, sorry. I'm quite new here and I wouldn't know other than to mute the person. But if multiple people are sharing the same photo, that could be tricky. :(

@slider7420

Welcome! "Official" apps such as the one for Android may just use "publish" instead of "toot." My wife laughed at first and said it suited me, but when I invited her over, it wasn't so funny for her. A "lady" does not "toot." At least, not admit it in public.

@CC_StormWatch I'm currently using both to see which has more draw for me.

@reallyedbrown

I wouldn't know about any apps like that, but it would seem reasonable to be able to mute key words even if they are not hash tagged.

@Robotbeat The IT Security Saw: "Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean everyone ISN'T out to get me!" In that instance, efficiency is a less a consideration. And somehow TOR manages without being on a blockchain.

@Robotbeat "Federations" have attackable public nodes that can be attacked or blocked. It's ok for now, but as with so many things, if Government doesn't like it, it will tend to put the squeeze on to control or eliminate it. And I'm not aware of any social projects thinking strictly in terms of "no mothership" at this time. They might have a place if they existed.

@Robotbeat Ditching the "Mothership" model would go a long way. Just make it all peer-to-peer connections. No "servers."
