One user, @Pat said the server is a bit sluggish for him today, but its fast for me.

Anyone else out there seeing a slow response from the server?

@freemo @Pat yes. slow for me. ok once logged in but slow to connect.

@freemo @Pat
It's noticeably slow this morning. Are we on Mastodon 4.0 the latest?

@freemo @Pat have you enabled the instance ticker? i think it does some kind of request which times out.

cf.
github.com/InstanceTicker/Inst

@bonifartius

Is that something enabled in the client or the server?

@freemo

@Pat
i think it's selected via theme and the default qoto theme has it enabled
@freemo

@bonifartius

I don't see anything about "themes" in the profile or preferences setting on my client.

(I didn't go through every one cause it takes 20s to load on each click.)

@freemo

@bonifartius

Found it. Changed to Mastodon default Theme (dark)" and now the pages are loading quickly.

@freemo

@Pat nice :) i already had the screenshot prepared ;)

@freemo i think the instance ticker needs an update, cf. the issue i linked a few posts back. maybe just changing the domain works too.

@freemo

More data points...

- I pinged all the IP4 addresses resolved from qoto.org and lb.qoto.org and they'e in the 20's ms.

- Tried to load video.qoto.org and the page loads are intermittently slow, but I think that may be related to snatching the videos from the various peertube instances.

@bonifartius

@Pat

It is almost certainly the ticker's domain not resolving which gets you stuck on DNS resolution until it timesout.

@bonifartius

@freemo

What's that domain and I'll try a host lookup from here?

@bonifartius

@Pat

My guess it is the issue with the tickers, the domain is probably down so its stuck trying to resolve it. does the new theme have tickers?

@bonifartius

@freemo @Pat I wasn't completely sure whether it was the server or something in between, but a boggy server would explain the lags I was seeing this morning.

@jeffdean @freemo @Pat we can probably expect the to suffer a lot of performance problems this month

@freemo A bit while loading media during peak US hours last night, but it wasn't too bad. Just took like 5-10 seconds or so.

@freemo seems okay for me!
Love that you're checking! 🙏

@freemo @Pat It is a bit slow for me right now. (15.73 sec for full page load)

@Pat @freemo
Actual footage of my technical prowess.... but I will give it a go.

@PhDMarie

hahaha

Im reluctant to fix it in our code because its a long process and ill have to reverse it once/if the service comes back up... if you wait a few days it might resolve itself, if not ill eventually just axe it from the code.

@Pat

@freemo @Pat I did it! GREAT SUCCESS! It is moving much faster now. Thank you both!

@PhDMarie

It appears it is related to the ticker being down (thats an external service). if you switch to a non-ticker theme it should be ok.

@Pat

@freemo Initial connection was very very slow. Once connected, things sped up. Still slight lag on new page loads.

@freemo @Pat
Yes the server is slower for me today too. I briefly see the message "waiting for miy.pw..." Maybe there is a problem with this URL/server?

@freemo @Pat it's been quite slow on initially connecting today (I just setup the app on my phone). Now, once connected, it's quite smooth

@freemo QOTO itself seems fine, but page loads on QOTO are making calls to miy.pw, which is slow and occasionally returning a 503 error. The only call I could find in the browser network debugger is for some CSS: miy.pw/css/12.css

@deegeese yes this is because the ticker service recently came down.. switching to a theme without a ticker will solve it.. im fixing it

@freemo I had switched to no-ticker, and when I re-enabled the default, the slowdown returned.

@deegeese yes, of course it would.. you have to keep teh no-ticker enabled. With the ticker down it is equivalent without the broken call.

@freemo Sorry, I misunderstood that you had taken the ticker out of 'QOTO Default' when you actually changed the default to no-ticker.
