Yes itt happens on creation. My point is usually people who use github to work with git are the ones seeing this.. The pros use the command line to work with git including creation of their repos..
The reason i find local creation most common is because people dont usually create their github repo day one. I usually find people start working locally until a few commits in and only then create a github repo and push.
Whatever the reason I just know I see master default branches on new projects far more often than I see main right now.

@Pat You must begin this immediately :)

A resync to master would be nice. Taking merge requests and hopefully will do it myself otherwise soon.
Hello. This is my first post. Or Toot as I won't be calling IT. My interests are...

Hello, all. I've been around for a few days but haven't yet made an #introduction post. So here we go.
I'm a #bioinformatics consultant with [The Bioinformatics CRO](https://www.bioinformaticscro.com/) working on a variety of small and large projects ranging from fundamental genomics to clinical decision support. Before that, for several years I was a postdoc and ORISE fellow specializing in high-altitude medicine and physiology at the University of Colorado Altitude Research Center. My academic background is a nearly even mix of #biostatistics, machine learning, and biology.
The ARC* has been sadly moribund for a few years, but thanks to collaborations with other groups, we're [starting to get more active again](https://harcsummit.org/). Hopefully I will have more to say about that in the future. Meanwhile, feel free to ask me anything about #altitude medicine---I think I still remember most of it.
Years before _that_, I was an Air Force #medic (after a brief stint as an Army infantryman) followed by a couple of years as a civilian EMT. My time in patient care informs my approach to science: the numbers I crunch represent human lives.
Otherwise, I'm an armchair #paleontologist hoping to be able to call myself an _amateur_ paleontologist again one of these days---by which I mean actually spending some time in the field and/or the prep lab---a too-occasional science fiction writer, and chronically sleep deprived. Also, my life is the internet: it's cats all the way down.
*Fellow #Primeval fans may recognize the jacket in the picture. My wonderful fiancée found it for me when I was hired at the ARC, for exactly the reason you think.
I've been thinking about how we can use what we learned about remote work & virtual meetings from the pandemic. It would be great if we didn't have to release lots of carbon to meet, and could live wherever we wanted. But, there are downsides to virtual everything, particularly with our current tech & practices.
Should we really be trying to go back to how things were? Can we learn from our pandemic experience? What are the best practices & tech for setting up virtual and hybrid meetings? Do we really need VR and avatars for virtual/hybrid to work? Are there advantages, for certain kinds of people, of virtual platforms?
This is likely a personal preference: I think virtual works as well as in-person when communication is mostly one-directional, e.g. prepared talks and, to some extent, poster sessions. If conferences are mainly talks and posters, I think they should be virtual.
I am hoping that n-way virtual communication could be better with better organization and technology. Places like CERN have been doing hybrid & virtual meetings for a long time. Can we learn from them? https://qz.com/1832018/how-physicists-solved-your-zoom-video-conferencing-problems
Now to be a bit cynical -- I think those in charge are those that did/do well in our old/current system, but that system is not great for everyone. Again, this is personal, but I'm better at expressing myself in writing. I'm more likely to ask a question at a conference if I can enter a virtual queue. God I dread mixing at conferences. This one time there was "science speed dating" at a conference. It was torture. Maybe for some people sometimes virtual can be better?
Anyways, I thought I'd use this virtual platform to bring up these ideas! I know many disagree on this and are happy to get back to conferences. I'd also like to mention that for people who continue to be concerned about COVID, going back to normal is not yet possible (will it ever be??). For me, this article rings true: "For those still trying to duck covid, the isolation is worse than ever" https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/2022/10/26/covid-pandemic-still-isolating/
@medigoth Add it in your settings under subscriptions
@medigoth Several ways to do it yes. Depends where and how you want it to show.. like you can create a column for it. or you can subscribe to it.
@patricia@mastodon.social I wouldnt doubt you being in the "pro" group.. and perhaps your an exception as far as pros go WRT this practice. But the fact remains its exceedingly rare the pros seem to care enough to change from the default for no compelling reason. Usuallyt he type of people who use git tend to stick to the norm/standard/default unless there is a reason to change it. But as you point out, yes, you can change it to whatever non-standard default branch you wish.
@tpa fedora is extremely widely used, but mostly as a server in a corperate environment. I very very rarely see it used as a personal distro on a personal computer.
I have nothing against it mind you, Im just speaking about its perception among hard core linux users.
@tpa Using microsoft edge at all, even on windows, was hard enough to grok.. the thought of someone running it on linux was a large shock in its own right.. Everything else added to the idea of it being satire, like fedora is usually a distro a lot of people dont use and those that do arent not the normal linux users you expect, so seemed like emphasizing the satire (As to suggest fedora users are just windows users in disguiste), etc.
@tpa all of it honestly.. .I must admit I pretty heavy on the cringe reading that.. no judgements, i mean do what you like of course... just a tough one for me to grok
@tpa Is this satire? Please tell me it is satire.
@oliof@octodon.social Not sure exactly how that is a problem.. I have revoked signatures before on keys i signed on public key servers and it worked just fine.
The issue i see with running our own key server is that it wont federate with the popular key servers. Right now you put your key on a mainstream key server it will federate out to most others, not so if we run our own.
This will potentially lead to some issue with people trying to figure out how to obtain our keys.
And make sure there is absolutely no attention to nuance...

The lack of HSM support for signify rules it out completely as an option for me.
