Please reboost this #poll.

In your opinion (does not have to be informed), what is the ideal #Mastodon #Instance size for #content #creators? (For content consumers, see poll in previous toot.)

@fourmajor I disagree to an extent. This is a "how many hairs make a beard" question. There is some liminal space, but your profile picture clearly has one and @freemo 's clearly lack one. There is a realm of existence on the edge of consciousness, but it is unstable. I propose that while there may be debate about what hit the historic marker of the first artificial consciousness, that it will be perfectly evident if and when such a thing comes into being.

There's an interesting (but paywalled) editorial board opinion piece discussing social media platform problems at

washingtonpost.com/opinions/20

I reference it because, buried in after all the back-story is the following statement, which I like, and I think is also relevant in the context of this thread.

"What matters is that they’re set up to get it right, in aggregate, according to the public commitments they’ve made.

That starts with something as simple as platforms committing to transparency, "

This lines up nicely with the intent of the UFoI.

@mattblaze On My first day on Mastodon, some dude scolded me for disagreeing with someone about whether Federal Government employees should be allowed on Mastodon (I think they should be). He said I was too new and shouldn't tell anyone I disagree with them. Then he reported me.

I think this is a newly emerging type of troll that has learned to live within Mastodon, under the radar of moderators, while being extremely annoying. I'm seeing a growing number of complaints about this type of activity. It's all probably the same few people.

I hope people know enough to just ignore them

@AndyLowry @dotsonapage @freemo This does a good job of summarizing why I chose this server when creating my own account.

On the one hand, those who found this info on their own before joining are probably the envisioned userbase, anyway. But I do hope this thread / toot goes at least a little viral; right now, I fear it's only really visible on the local qoto instance, and 'we' are already aware. Perhaps it is more visible in the fediverse (?) than I realize. One can hope.

In any case, I'm glad I found the qoto.org domain, and didn't just look for the 'most popular' one to start out with. The content I've seen here so far aligns nicely with the as-stated goals, IMO.

I also signed up for Post; between the two, it has more of the look / feel of the ; enough that I'd term it a younger clone. At first, that's what I felt would win hearts / minds--a cloned UI. But this platform and the open-source infra is definitely growing on me.

The mobile capability existing here is a big plus, as well (I'm writing this via Tusky). Not sure how far away the Post community is from having same, but not having it 'now' is definitely going to stunt their growth.

I'll stop here, before I'm tempted to use more of the block :) But no longer having to squeeze a thought into 255 chars? Yes, please.

Which is your favorite lepton?

The stochastic nature of interconnection in contemporary 'globalised' 'culture' means there is no Good way to do things, only a commitment to continuous striving to do things less badly. As a starting point, rather than basing action on the assumption that you are correct, begin by assuming you are incorrect and reevaluate.

@lxo @mediocreape @freemo @lxo makes a good point here. I think the "alternate walled garden" analogy is misleading. is an agreement between gardeners that they will not build walls between themselves.

@LouisIngenthron Dude trying to help build was pushed into the hospital with a heart attack seeing death threats, urges to suicide, and snuff video. I am not happy, and I am not inclined to give those participating the "benefit of a doubt." @freemo may have a link to something "suitable for a press release," but I'm not in a position to clarify.

I see too many people being the monster they claim they are fighting. Every time... Every GOD DAMNED FUCKING TIME I wonder if I'm being just a bit too dark and cynical, I have this shit to remind me I need to lower my expectations a little more.

@freemo @ufoi I'm extremely new here but if one of the oft-repeated criticisms of what seems to be some kind of network of admins with a shared strategy of cooperative moderation that has gradually become quite large and influential (the name of which that I haven't yet clearly been able to identify - fedifence? fediblock?) is that it creates a walled garden and as such is anathema to the free and open principles of the fediverse, proposing a competing system of large coordinated cooperative moderation strategy but it's better because it's run how i like it not how they like it will likely result in an outcome that is not appreciably different.

It's like there's a tweet for everything he does. I love this.

The group of people who are trying to divide the fediverse seem to have reached a new low.. They have a tool that lists how many instances block a particular instance, but it is highly manipulative.

For starters it is hand curated.. so they exclude blocks against their own instances and only includes instances they actually dislike.

Worse yet they curate a list ordered by "most blocked".. problem is they use the number of instances that block. They game the system by having large number of single-user instances. So instances in the top 50 may only be blocked by a few hundred people but still appear as if the blocks are significant....

This is why we need transparency, its why we need the UFoI.org

@ufoi

I came across a math puzzle here in the fediverse, and puzzled about it for a while. (Lost the link to the original post; if it's yours let me know.)

Here's the problem:

```
Bob was given 30 distinct natural numbers. He wrote down all the 435 pairwise sums. It appears that among those sums, 230 are divisible by 3. How many of the original 30 numbers are divisible by 3?
```

I was able to find the answer after playing with it for a bit. Then I made this cool visualization. (It's a spoiler, of course.)

@dotsonapage
@freemo
I'm delighted by all the goodies and benefits I happened into on mine here at qoto. The starting text block is at 64K, which is huge in comparison to most, for example. The description page at qoto.org/about/more will give you a rundown, and I think you'll be pleased and surprised by the list of features.

Despite the recent enormous surge in activity and memberships, the server is still speedy (as is the administration). I've had zero trouble with any unpleasant characters lurking about. The management is pro-active in handling issues quickly. The underlying reason for its existence is as a science and science education instance, so there are many intelligent and well-spoken folks about.

Even though there are now over 25,000 users, the admin is reachable and responsive.

Hope you check us out!

The eyes on this one glowing through the sunglasses is kinda awesome.

Having #Elon run a communications plattform is like having 12.000 mice in a trenchcoat run a cheese shop.
