@trinsec @freemo @mur2501 they are doing that as alcoholism isn't viewed as a sickness but as a weakness. our societies don't like weaklings, especially when it's due to their own actions. they usually perfectly know that they have a problem, but they won't admit it because then they'll be shunned by society.
alcohol roughly triggers the same response in the brain as benzodiazepines. thus i'd say that nearly every case of alcoholism is self-treatment of other issues. nobody shits on people on medication for anxiety, but if you are told often enough that those are weak people, you'll rather use alcohol than get treatment.
it doesn't have to be plain telling them that they are weak, i think the advertising everywhere and seeing other people being happy seemingly without effort is enough to get the message through.
@Deki Hi welcome to the server, great to have you here.
What areas of STEM do you work in? What sort of projects do you have going on?
Please feel free to reach out anytime if you have questions I am one of the moderators here.
For anyone following this bug from this thread here is a link to the issue report:
I just had to lower the difficulty on the captcha as it seemed to be triggering users based on IP address as spammers even if they were a legitimate user that passed the captcha.
As such we may start seeing an increase in spammers, I hope not, the visual part of the captcha is just as difficult but I believe it just wont block based on suspicious IP addresses anymore. so it may remain effective against spammers.
With that said if anyone notices an increase in spammers let me know and we may wish to discuss going back to approval for new signups (though I will only do that if the mods have a commitment to check it a few times a day which we werent doing before other than myself).
Hey @Gargron One of our users ( @zleap ) recently pointed out that the detect text in image link in mastodon doesnt work and the errors in the browser console at first suggested it was a configuration issue. See attached images
However on closer inspection it appears that this error is occuring on all mastodon servers including mastodon.social, which suggests to me this may not be a configuration issue but some sort of bug with mastodon.
A proper bug report will be filed on git shortly but I wanted to let you know and see if you had any idea whats going on.
@Eki Hi there, I notice you've been on the server for a bit but never had a chance to welcome you, I am the admin/founder here at QOTO. Hello and welcome. Must have missed you as you seem to post sporadically.
How are you doing and how are you enjoying the community here at QOTO so far. I'd love to hear your perspectives.
Also what are your areas of interest, What sort of work do you do in the STEM field? How long have you been in STEM? Do you have any projects you've worked on you'd like to share. I haven't seen much in your profile about your STEM pursuits so would love to hear more about what you have going on.
Also if there is anything I can help you with, please feel free to reach out anytime.
I have been watching the original MacGyver series lately. I used to be into it when I was really young, before i knew much about anything worked. Thought he was amazing...
Now, as a proper scientist and engineer it is so cringe worthy. All his little impromptu "inventions" make no sense and wouldnt work. Gives me a giggle.
"The risk of #TraceTogether and similar apps is that they normalise a new form of personal data collection, further enmeshing us into what has been called “surveillance capitalism” – a regime in which more and more of our personal information is captured, aggregated, and traded for profit by corporations and governments."
@freemo Writing code is absolutely all about successive drafts. Even working code is usually not the last draft, I almost always redraft what I’ve done to make it clear to whoever will be reading it what’s going/what the important parts are
@freemo A long time ago, I'd be offended in your position. Now, I understand and accept that a large percentage of human beings are illogical and have mental disorders. Don't waste time trying to logic someone out of something they didn't logic themselves into.
