The 6 points of advice I have given to many people in my life are pretty much what I distilled from baz Luhrman's speech (my last post). This is basically the advice that has stuck with me from that:

1) Do one thing every day that scares you
2) Don't be reckless with other people's hearts; don't put up with people who are reckless with yours
3) Sing every chance you get
4) Never let distance be a barrier, travel!
5) Never expect anyone or anything to financially support you
6) Be critical of advice you receive, but be patient and kind to those who give it.

Baz Luhrman's speech to the class of '97. Some of the best advice I ever heard and it still sticks with me:

Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of '97:

Wear sunscreen. If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth; or never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded. But trust me, in 20 years you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. You are not as fat as you imagine

Don't worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing
Bubblegum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that
Never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4 PM on some idle Tuesday

Do one thing every day that scares you

Sing

Floss

Don't waste your time on jealousy; sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. The race is long, and in the end, it's only with yourself

Remember the compliments you receive; forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how

Keep your old love letters. Throw away your old bank statements

Stretch

Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives. Some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don't

Get plenty of calcium

Be kind to your knees, you'll miss them when they're gone

Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't
Maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't
Maybe you'll divorce at 40
Maybe you'll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary
Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. Your choices are half chance; so are everybody else's

Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it, or what other people think of it. It's the greatest instrument you'll ever own

Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room

Read the directions, even if you don't follow them

Do not read beauty magazines; they will only make you feel ugly

Be nice to your siblings; they are your best link to your past and the
People most likely to stick with you in the future

Understand that friends come and go, but for the precious few you
Should hold on

Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle, because the older you get, the more you need the people you knew when you were young

Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard

Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft

Travel

Accept certain inalienable truths: prices will rise, politicians will philander, you too will get old-- and when you do, you'll fantasize that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders

Respect your elders

Don't expect anyone else to support you

Maybe you have a trust fund, maybe you have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one might run out

Don't mess too much with your hair, or by the time you're 40, it will look 85
Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it
Advice is a form of nostalgia. Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth

But trust me on the sunscreen

So some scammer on FB just tried to tell me if I invest 1500$ in their system I'll have 15000$ in 4 days. a 10x profit in 4 days investing in their trading platform...

Of course I told them they were an idiot and not just lying but dont know basic math. With those returns if someone invested a single dollar it would take only 45 days for them to be the richest person on the entire planet... Jesus christ how did people get so stupid.

Noting A Perfect Circle has done will ever get old... it might even get better with time. Tool too but Tool is more of a mood I think.

Making more progress. Finally got the entire working surface of my desk completely decluttered and scrubbed. The rest of the house is spotless right now but i swear my office is taking as long as the whole house to clean, most of it was just figuring out where to put the mountain of shit i had on my desk, so this is really the bulk of the effort.

Behind me in the other half of the room is the EE lab and radio station, but that will be a breeze compared to this damn desk.

Once I have the rest of the room cleaned though I need to double back and figure out to do with that nest of wires on the desk. Takes up too much space just for wires. I'm thinking of doing some sort of cable management that is attached to the wall. At the very least going to screw that router on to the wall.

Splitting a dataset into training and test set is cool and all, but but did you try splitting your metadataset into training and test datasets?

Anyone out there feel like tagging along for a caribbean vacation. I am thinking of getting a house on the beach on a caribbean island for 6 months. Should be a spare couch to host a guests on and off. So anyone who is up for a visit hit me up.

Bonus points if your into SCUBA, I'll be doing a lot of SCUBA from the beach. At a minimum you need to love the ocean and swimming otherwise it wont be worth the plane ticket.

@freemo It appears this 4nm layer is amorphous (or at least polycrystalline), not corundum/sapphire, unless produced by plasma oxidation with the express purpose of producing hardened aluminum oxide for increased hardness. Additionally, while clear, pure, alpha-crystalline aluminum oxide is often called sapphire (for what I think must be a marketing gimmick) it is actually just pure corundum, as sapphire is corundum with the metal ion inclusions that aren't red (which is ruby).

But the aluminum passivity layer is pretty sick from a materials/chemical perspective for sure :3

In St. Croix, one of the american virgin islands, drinking and driving is perfectly legal. I was shocked when I learned that from a bartender who encouraged me to take a beer with me for my ride home, an open one (I was driving).

Better yet when I asked her about if it was a problem having people drinking while driving she remarked that it was ok and safe because the roads on st. croix were so narrow and winding that people paid more attention and no one would speed.... didnt seem like the best of explanations to me.

Sooo someone not on qoto was asking a few days ago for access to our peertube instance. I totally lost track of the conversation and forgot to reply. Now I cant find it.
