@thatguyoverthere @freemo @lmrocha @pj well the ancient Greeks summarized the logical fallacies. And probably about 90% of the media's content would fall into one of these categories.

@lmrocha @freemo @pj @mike805 lol it's like you really aren't paying attention. He never said that you were arguing an anti-vax position, but that you are using techniques he's run into when discussing the vaccine issue. Things like completely ignoring the actual argument he's making and relentlessly attacking a strawman he's already lit on fire.

@freemo @realcaseyrollins Agreed. Taxpayers are the customers and the employers. We *are* the police union. Any union they form separately is in direct opposition to the general public they're meant to serve.

> Republicans are, in theory, about small government.

Haha yes. In theory.

I'm in the #GOP but for the life of me can't find many prominent politicians who are about small government. #Trump and #RonDesantis sure as heck ain't it.

@jaysonmassey

Think about if the first amendment was worded as:

A free press being necessary for the functioning of a country, the right to freedom of speak shall not be infringed

Essentially the same format.. if you read that would you or anyone objectively reading it be able to say "Ok thats saying only the press should have freedom of speech and no one else should have that right"... or that "that seems to suggest I can infringe on peoples freedom of speech as long as its not the press"

I doubt it, and frankly I suspect anyone reading the second amendment who isnt bias would probably agree with me.

While I am often not very happy witht he GOP leaning SCOTUS on this one I really am glad to have a right-leaning supreme court.

Lets hope they do the right thing and knock down these and similar state-laws as unconstitutional and in violation of the

> I posted papers in response to you saying there is no evidence that more guns increase mortality. The papers I posted are 100% relevant to the discussion. In both individual households and society at large, greater availability of guns leads to higher mortality (after controlling for all sorts of demographic factors) , not just in suicide but also in homicide rates.

See, thats not what I said at all.. I said **nothing** about overall mortality rate. I talked about murder and violent acts in society as a whole, that is vastly different than mortality rate, which I did not claim and in fact explicitly argued against more than once in the thread by making very clear that suicide by gun is completely unrelated to what is discussed, but would be included in figures of mortality rate.

Thank you for demonstrating for me exactly why you are posting non-sense articles that do not address remotely the assertions I am actually making.

@lmrocha @mike805 @freemo @pj what inconvenient bits? Shall not be infringed seems pretty straight forward. If you are referring to the militia portion we're back in a loop.

Where I think we may differ is that I see these rights as natural god given rights of man. Government doesn't give us our rights, and allowing them to take your rights away and calling any rights preservation oligarchy hurts my brain. If every supreme court justice tomorrow said oh we've change how we interpret the 2a that changes nothing as far as "rights" go. 2A is protection against infringement (weak as it may be) not granting you the right to bear arms.

Happy easter everyone... as you know zombie jesus is the final evolution of the jesus pokemon, and the most sacred of pokemon among christians... So have a wonderful easter everyone!

@Swagpuss McG You may not have noticed it yet because all you've ever seen so far of the Fediverse is Mastodon, but Mastodon doesn't give you an untouched "pure feed."

It leaves Mastodon toots untouched, yes.

But everything that comes from outside vanilla Mastodon is changed, if not to say mangled.

Posts from Pleroma, from Akkoma, from MissKey, from CalcKey, from FoundKey, from Socialhome, from GoToSocial, from Friendica, from Hubzilla, from (streams), even from Mastodon forks have any and all of their text formatting stripped away. You won't even be able to tell quotes because they aren't shown as such, because Mastodon removes the necessary formatting.

Also, pictures. Other projects can embed pictures within a post, and they can show more than four pictures. Mastodon rips the pictures out of the posts, converts the last four into file attachments, shows them after the post instead of within the post where they belong, and all but the last four pictures are discarded, thrown away, never to be seen by any Mastodon user.

If this isn't abstraction, I don't know what is.

That's why I've told you to try Akkoma and/or Friendica. It will open your eyes and show you what the Fediverse really looks like, and what can be done in the Fediverse, all once you're free from the restrictions and limitations of Mastodon. It'll be at least as much a revelation as when you learned that the Fediverse is, in fact, not only Mastodon.

If you're into astronomy, this is just so wild - a black hole ejected from a galaxy created a 200,000 light-year long trail (larger than our own galaxy) of new stars. hubblesite.org/contents/news-r
