(Practical tips)

Wanted to say following is not what it seems (both as a number or practical thing for me or others who use it in a different ways like)

DETAILS:
For me it is an initial process of interest where I click notifications (the bell) then realise more about you (if you might not say much from yourself and repeat other people). This is the main conditions to 'keeping track' of what you said and then I turn off *notifications* if not <--- this is a lot more direct initially AND understands your thread of thinking... If you're posts random posts and not well-thought / towards anything specific, then IT'S A LOT MORE OBVIOUS AND FASTER THIS WAY.

So rather than maybe seeing a post or two between 1000's of other posts (literally 10's daily / 100) I think it's better to see it in a chain via notifications from you (so that's my main advice here when you follow others to turn notifications on - see here for how to do that qoto.org/@freeschool/109031885)

If profiles are not really paying much attention much or just reactionary you're dropped from this focus (even though you're followed but put just on a non-looked list).

I hope people can see the follower number can be quite useless in this way and just a momentary sentiment usually lost / forgotten until it comes up more by chance with someone else (but then lost forgotten again) unless you're really on top of things / checking in the way, making contact or making time for things (which are likely always backlogged if not done near immediately which is what I do)

Some has to be more than the diluted 'follow' and something more than hardly in focus random if you're serious about anything- which usually isn't clear
(even to people themself I think / judging by their posts)

Browser Tip - Save Pictures from Video (Save A Snapshot)

I'm stupid but I'd like to check if you knew "Save Snapshot As" (right click on video) can save a picture from your favourite video in Mastodon!

If you didn't know let me know- sometimes people "SAVE AS" only to get the 1 picture for wallpaper or whatever so this help time and effort (no download needed).

FOLLOW A GROUP !
- Following a group is done a few ways but I found this way as 100% / BEST WAY so far:

Step 1. Find the name of any group (on a.gup.pe/ website)... "Plants" group for example...

2. Put name "Plants" with @ before it in Mastodon Search Box (the top left box):
@plants (and hit enter)

3. The Mastodon search result will show @ plants @ a.gup.pe (without the spaces) as a group

4. Click :follow: to follow group!
Done!

(If you see two entries in the search results then one might be an old server from before - just follow what the newest which is "a.gup.pe" <--- newest has extra "a." in the address)

MAKE A GROUP !

- Anyone can make a group.
It's done in 2 ways (your choice both is ok and can't go wrong even if you do both)

METHOD 1 - New groups can be created in the Mastodon Search box. So at the same time as when you use the search to search for it then the group it's automatically made for you in the process if it doesn't already exist! Then it shows up a few seconds later!

METHOD 2 Another way to create group is to *mention it* in a post and also at the same time it is created for you.
Example if I mention:
@ Freeschool @ a.gup.pe (without spaces) then the group will be made!

This group it's now created and if you start typing @ freeschool then you can autocomplete @ Freeschool @ a.gup.pe

SUMMARY
Whatever method you choose from it will create a new group name as you do that method and it will show up when you put that in search box results or mention it in future!
*Immediately* anyone else looking can find the group!

It will not show in the a.gup.pe/ website as it has to be more populate to show up there... and better for privacy not to show the smaller groups.

MY OTHER COMMENTS:

I personally like they way to create group using no external signup AND using existing Mastodon account.

The Mastodon search box name provides a direct and powerful interface to see things
e.g. "@ freeschool @ a.gup.pe " shows " freeschool " group.

After creating group you can post and mention the group name to people in your group and can be quite private.

HOW TO SEE POSTS?

Posts show up in timeline like following a person.

To see posts just Mastodon search box in Mastodon with group name (like @ plants) and then click the group name to natively show the existing posts.

I don't think you can enable notifications on these groups (yet) but the usual mentioning / replying / favouriting can show you immediately someone read it or replied.

POST IN A GROUP !
To post to a group yourself, mention the " @ plants @gup.pe " address (without spaces) in your post. If you start typing @plants now it will attempt to autocomplete for you so just select the a.gup.pe address from that and you don't have to type out the full address!

Just remember for posting just the group name is needed... use @group and autocomplete will do the rest in your compose box and you can choose the appropriate.

If you delete-redraft post don't worry it will only show once - I re-draft my posts a lot so I know !

(notice the "a." prefix - Old website was gup.pe which changed earlier in 2022, around April)

- a.gup.pe is the server that is used as a middle between Mastodon without needing separate accounts but rather creates accounts itself on-the-fly / as you ask or search for it!

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN HASHTAG AND GUPPE GROUP?

@GuppeGroups helps actively grow your network of people around topics of interest. So if two unconnected people both participate in same group, it will cause them to become connected and see each other.
Hashtag doesn't have this unless you happen to post at same time and look yourself at hashtag page more aggressively / manually etc.
The Guppe group way *let's you* know and choose to follow it more actively listening.

Hashtags are more a way of organizing toots and checking when you want (not sure if a tool exists or worth it for high-traffic hashtags)

POSTING TO GROUP VIA PUBLIC OR UNLISTED POST?

"Public" in your post setting (when writing any post) will get it seen asap.

"Unlisted" level of post means everyone in the group will still get it, but it won't appear in local or global timelines, just when someone is looking in the group specifically.

RECOMMEND ANY GROUPS / ANY OTHER EXAMPLES?

For new Mastodon people: 

Twitter has algorithms to get you more engaged / clicking.
Mastodon does not. So in order to enjoy Mastodon more you have to take some time to reach out and find people...
Means not just a liking things (called 'favourite' here) or subscribing ('follow') but trying to message the person and talk to folks that you enjoy in order to get best from life! Even do something with them...

Sounds asking for much or very impersonal, but I think that is what it's going to take to heal the world more attempts using safer things like Mastodon!!

(Without the algorithms for now but who knows that might get implemented in the future!)

So no random popular posts / very little 'trending' stuff to keep you clicking and engaged but you can click 'Federated' at the top to see all messages or add lists !!

Home is where your followed people show up. Pick some people every now and again from your follow list so you're not just following 100's of people because that also loses focus and actually you get to understand reality (not what you think from seeing text on screen but interacting with someone and even audio chatting with them).
Just following is not the way.
Taking interest in them as your to-do list for those who you follow means they re not just entertainment or a soulless medium, and less loses sight of the actual person! Co-create!

How to get to see a user's local timeline of posts (on their server) just from following seeing user's post somewhere?
So right now on Qoto you see which server but click on it (under their name) and it goes to their profile not the server name...

The criteria is mouse clicks only, no typing, how to get to someone's server timeline of posts after seeing a someone post somewhere (like a reply or direct message)...

So if you're not on Qoto... how would you get to see the local timeline of post here? Can you do it just by mouse clicks?

Anyway my profile is clickable using my name so this would be cool to click my name or my server (because we are 'the best'...

I think many may have this thought and I thought I'd symbolise it here by sharing a song about it even if it's not realistic to run away (or keep running Forest Gump style).

Does anyone need help in their garden in the future? That's my own personal question and want someone around to dance / practise - with good music whenever they want it!... maybe a troop of dancer-people around or just 1 disco-man (me) ?

I'm not interested in the Marijuana part of the song but thought I'd say people are looking to do gardening so to form with others and run-away might makes sense (all in theory for now of course until shit hits fan then we plant with it!)

Consolidate and skip the city... ?

Might be an avenue with a few who already outside (don't mean everyone but could be)

I also dance like I'm drugs but maybe music is my drug and the message to promote etc!

So you would have someone's got the energy to dance anytime when music is good and have their own collection to play. I don't need drugs for doing things green (like a type of dog that can run almost forever with breaks of course to dance / talk etc).

So I thought I'd speculate moving in theory / making potential alliances / exchanges / last stands working on the land / working with the land especially when crisis hits (or even before since we're in crisis somewhat already).

Now is the time to speculate, create pretend bridges and do some hops and jumps even to help visualise it a bit better before pushes comes to shove, and then to smile about it with each other knowing we know the score.

I guess the rich here could say something but I mean rich in terms of will-power / land / self-sufficiency attempts / those actively looking to collect people like Pokemon (and naturally their worldly problems) and get making some omelettes / something? :)
Or just way works going around doing things ad-hoc ?
