@jmccluskey This isn't just academia. Most all large companies are falling into this trap. I think it's because they're so big that their HR dept. doesn't actually know the requirements to get the job done. They're just trying to accommodate the dreams of those in charge. Also I don't think they're always hard "requirements".

They're probably setting the bar high to filter applicants. If they set the bar low, they'll be inundated with applications to process. I was once hired by IBM, and I wasn't even close to what their technical description of the position required. The actual requirements were actually well within my skill set.

@nomi Geocities was a brilliant idea but executed poorly. I still find the idea of private domains fascinating from a big data perspective. They could have gathered way more data than any other company on their users, simply because users made their sites as a personal reflection of themselves, or more valuably, who they wish they were. Had they capitalized on this, they could have grown into a data monster that even Google would envy.

@baldengineer I don't believe it does, I had to make a few drivers when I was playing around with hackintosh stuff, and found it handles USB quite strangely, and more so with thunderbolt / USB. That said, although there may be no driver, all USB devices are still accessible so there's a high likelyhood someone wrote a script to handle it.

@skyblond got all your ports accounted for in in nginx? Also don't forget that Mastadon uses the websockets protocol which upgrades from http. From what I remember a special set of headers needs to be added for websockets through nginx.

@EubieDrew I'm pretty sure this whole scale is irrelevant. It's a linear 2 dimensional scale to represent 2 social perspectives. Instead of people thinking multi-dimensionally, they're forcing their mindsets into 2 predetermined boxes of variant volume.

What if the issues tied to this scale aren't important to you?

If you're pro personal rights, but also believe large corporations shouldn't be regulated, that doesn't make you centered or balanced does it?

Emotions shouldn't play a factor in human rights. In the court systems, "you hurt my feelings" is not a valid defense, so I'm failing to comprehend why we're dictating sociological rules based on that.

Sorry I've been crunching big data for most of my life. 😂 I'm not trying to rant, I'd really like some answers to these questions from someone who gives them much thought. 👍
