I don't think it's the tech. Starting next week, my wife will be away on a very recently planned stay away from home for family reasons. It's the first time we've been separated for nearly 20 years of our marriage.
I'm not worried about the open-source nature of the platform. We'll be out of the comforting, physical contact we've had for nearly 2 decades. The far-future is the far-future. The next month is going to be a big ball of suck. And if people express dismay over lack of human contact and having masks in the way of seeing that smile... I can't dismiss that.

With John Adams as my personal hero and person I most identify with, what's not to love about me?
@freemo @koyu@koyu.space
"A large number of well-educated" idiots pushing an agenda of control for us "pleebs" own good is a recipe for their natural hypocrisy to be pointed out and having the rest of anything actually true completely ignored.
In other words, pretty much exactly what you can observe in the American treatment of the pandemic thus far. The actual truth of the benefits of masking is largely irrelevant. Tribalism is all that matters.
"Much more likely to die from not wearing a respirator than you are to die from not wearing a seatbelt."
Ok. In light of the current US political situation and the trust the public at large has in apolitical authorities in health matters... what source would you choose to cite for this which the public in general would generally agree to trust for that little factoid?
As far as PSAs and whatnot... again, given the current political climate within the US, how do you propose the government at large, fractured and lurching towards civil war as it is, coordinate to spend the money for and promote the information of your claim, true or not as it is? And your claim may very well be true.
"The government should see..." There is no "government" within the US. There are really only fractured fiefdoms of various tribes increasingly reluctant to cooperate among one another to the point of publicly considering disunion as a favorable solution and outcome. And if we go that route, we'll have about as much interest in sane precautions against COVID-19 as Ukraine. You might say they have other priorities at this time. And so will we if it comes to that. "Should" in one hand and sh.....pit in the other. See what will fill faster.
"Put my tribe in charge and have them make everyone be safe for their own good" is not the winning solution you might think it would be. Even if you don't believe that's exactly how it would be perceived... that's exactly how that will be perceived. And why such a move will be so totally doomed to failure.
@WhatYouMcCallit
With all this drama going on its no surprise that I keep thinking of this quote over and over....
(my own #calligraphy )
High-risk, low-benefit behavior is not caused by the virus. The high-risk, low-benefit behavior perpetuates the virus, encouraging it to mutate faster. If the people involved were more inclined to look at risk vs. benefits honestly, you would naturally have higher benefits and lower risk.
But that requires the mythical unicorn known as a "rational human acting in their own reasonable best interest." Because of the evidence I find around me, I don't believe such a mythical beast exists.
One thing trinsec noticed that is important here. Almost 100% of the replies on this post where this person is accusing me of more toxic bullshit... virtually all of the replies are in our support... I really appreciate that.

More of the stuff going on. I'll stop stop bothering you with it after this, but on the "which instance" question, I'd be fussy about an instance that supports factual evidence over "QAnon-like" tactics of spreading hate and lies.
With the evidence presented thus far, it ain't @\freemo.
No surprise, now these toxic bullies from tech.lgbt are trying to have private conversations with me, which I of course indulge, and then quote whatever ammo they can use out of context and dump the rest...
It is amazing these people trust anyone who is so clearly **not** being transparent.
Qoto.org blocking, genocide mention
With the recent Fediverse drama going on, this image came to mind. Be careful about who you think to push over the edge, because you just might make it worse.

Humans gotta human. It's there, but for the vast majority it's at a level they won't see unless they are aware it's there.
Of course it will, which is why its so important we find a solution before it gets worse.
Pointing out truth and shedding light on management decisions willfully based on lies and misinformation rarely if ever result in a humble "mea culpa."
There "should be" consequences, but perhaps you have heard, " 'should' into one hand and shit in the other, see what fills faster?"
The design for Mastodon was not set up to explicitly forbid technical arbitrary control over the entry list. Therefore it is compulsory the one who maintains the code also assert arbitrary control over the entry list. The only meaningful solution is to design that out of the platform. Pass that past the one who maintains that. Good luck.
In general I agree with you and *don't* want defederation to happen unless absolutely necessary.
But mastodon.social shouldn't be immune to consequences just because the lead developer has a hand in it. Letting the codebase be held hostage in that way would defeat the entire point of the Open Fediverse idea. We should treat it like any other instance and consider it if things ever get bad enough to justify it - **but** in this case I think there's still room for communication and correction, and I hope things get resolved in a friendly way.
@Dennis1212 There always are new things to learn, as you already know. With any system involving people, "Anything not explicitly forbidden is compulsory." Mastodon is no exception.
@Pjcoyle @Gaythia @freemo @shuttersparks Our Company President goes first name only, and he served as an Army officer, Major I believe, until he left. The liason from our parent company is Mr. ********, from Japan, of a different culture on such things.
During the early dark days of the Pandemic, I recall Mr. ****** wandering the production floor on the weekend, smiling and being friendly with us, even as we were all WTF/ stuff gettin' real. Both were there with us at that dark time... ON A WEEKEND. I wouldn't say I'd die for them, but yeah... I'd die for them.
How one would choose to be addressed and how they present their pronouns or not? If they are not being an obvious jackass, I've got stuff to do. I'd rather be doing the things that would build people up to be their best selves in truth and honesty.
@Dennis1212 Ugh... I'm working up an ear infection while trying to get sleep...
Relative to your "should I move instance " question, it's still back to "are you at home there?"

That is one entry point into the very human side of Mastodon. I'm on qoto.org, more by accident than deliberate design. If I had evidence @/freemo were less than completely honest, I'd drop this instance and likely seek spacey.space. I would do so without hesitation or regret. I don't give a damn. I don't have to.
But what you see is the ugly side under the hood of the Mastodon mechanics. It's run by people. I don't know where mas.to stands on dropping qoto.org from the entry list over hate, lies, and petty jealousy. Had a been a week later, I would not have known about qoto.org. Had I come to know about the current kerfuffle, I'd have likely made enough of a pest of myself enough to get booted from whatever instance I was on. I saw one person claim they were booted just for asking about the situation.
"Mind over matter: if you don't mind, it doesn't matter."
Where ever you want to go (figuratively speaking) with this info from here, I support your choice. This will likely have no effect on your enjoyment of Mastodon. I just get cranky over the oddest things.
