time I suppose. Name is Carl, but I go by scout basically everywhere. I am from Arkansas. I game a lot, do IT for a living, and work on cars and electronics projects for fun. My family enjoys camping and we are dog people. Here to try something new. Not enjoying social media elsewhere.

Let me introduce myself! My name is Ilenna Jones, I am a computational neuroscientist with keen interest on how dendrites contribute to a singular neuron's ability to compute functions and learn tasks. I build biophysical models of neurons in and use principles to investigate how models can learn and compute given their biologically realistic constraints.

I'm looking for postdocs right now! Feel free to connect if you're looking for someone like me!

I'm very interested in helping other students find resources and guidance as they consider science and in general. Feel free to connect if you're looking for advice/perspectives!

Ok, it's clear I need a way better post.

Hi, I'm Isaac. born and raised and still living in this wonderful state (just now on the opposite side of it). As a lover of all seasons, this is definitely home.

I grew up on a dairy farm and migrated away due to the draw of computers and getting a degree. I work as a lead systems and software engineer; which lets me enjoy the hobby of collecting hobbies. I am most definitely found being busy. I spend copious amounts of time , mostly riding and racing but also enjoying time on the road bike and commuting by bike to work when possible. I also coach middle/high schoool MTB racing and have spent several years on the board of our local MTB advocacy group.

I enjoy the outdoors and spend a lot of time in our and other spaces; towing a little Aliner classic camper around the country and enjoying it all with my wife and son. I enjoy hunting (no, I'm not a gun nut), fishing and hiking. I spend too much on equipment and not having enough time to use it; and can't wait until retirement so I can shoot more. are one of my favorite subjects. If we're not enjoying our wild spaces, we're donating to orgs to help preserve them.

I'm always tinkering and things; my upbringing (poor farm kid) allowed me to learn to be rather handy and have the ability to make all kinds of stuff. Some days I'd much rather be running my welder than a computer.

In the late winter and early spring you can find me making from ~100 taps on equipment I've built. My dad taught me the art and science of it and now my son gets to learn and we have a lot of fun.

And, I enjoy . Low, mid and now high power - but I'm only L1 high power certified so far. It allows me to make stuff. I enjoy scratch building immensely. It's also yet another reason to be and spend some fun time with my son.

That's me in a very condensed version. Glad to be here.

@freemo I don't like to brag, but I did take some advanced hip hop dance classes back in the day...

I didn't really know what to expect with Mastodon, but less than 24 hours in, I'm definitely a fan. And, to be honest, I don't think I'll miss the sound of crickets that so often followed a Tweet.

@PhDMarie I love how you've been here less than a day and only have one top level toot and 16 toots in general (so not massive effort your putting in or anything) and you are already up to 61 followers.

I think this really shows how much easier engagement and getting followers is over here than it is on twitter.

A few years ago, my daughter and I started to write an 2600 game based on Twitter and Trump. We never f8nished it, but here are some screens!

@jonreed Love it, but the line before last and the first has the wrong meter and it throws it off. May I suggest the following variant:

There once was a man called Musk,
Who hollowed the bird to a husk,
We migrated and flew,
To friends old and new,
And now we are fans of the tusk

@freemo @sgul Ah! Let me attempt to answer your actual question a bit more directly.

The Jewish people adopted the Babylonian calendar systems during the Babylonian Exile so for Western purposes we can mark the observance of the Sabbath and a 7-day cycle beginning sometime around 600 BCE. Of course every lunisolar calendar requires intercalary "leap" days to reconcile the lunar and solar cycles so "counting by Sundays" isn't easy over very long timeframes.

The last major revision to the Western calendar was, as others have noted, the switch from Julian to Gregorian, a process that took a couple centuries.

@sgul @freemo Wikipedia says 7-day "weeks" go back to Babylonia, including one day a week for making offering to the gods and avoiding prohibited activities.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babylo

Of course, other systems since have used different approaches including the French Revolution attempting to create a decimal calendar of 10-weeks.

Most calendar systems are lunisolar with the sun's position determining year length and the moon's phase determining month length. Reckoning weeks was more or less optional and of little interest.

And since prehistory is, by definition, before anything was recorded we can only speculate from limited findings how, or even if, time was recorded. It seems likely that some tribal leader made scratches on something to tally lunar months and maybe solar years.

Since I've been in Israel I have really wanted to visit the regions considered Palestine still (west bank, that sort of stuff). I have strong political opinions about it all but feel i really need to see both sides first hand and interact to really have a right to feel strongly about it.

Anyway one of the Palestinian workers I hired heard about this and invited to take me and show me around. I cant tell you all how excited I am to get to do that soon.

I get a new grill for my new home in on sunday! I am excited. My plan is to focus on a low-carb diet and just keep loads of chicken and a few steaks in the house and go to town!
