The UTM video on here is super cool. I remember reading about early conversations in FAA (IIRC) public hearings about how to integrate UAVs into existing air traffic control where the conclusion was basically ๐คทโโ๏ธ. It's tremendously heartening to see what developed out of that early period within only a few years.

@lupyuen on the upside, I didn't have to worry over it for 12 years. found out about it and resolved it in 30 minutes.

well, I feel dumb
@barefootstache thanks. I think my opinion is pretty much the same after reading the article, though I would add that I agree with "engineering is what engineers do": to the extent that we're called engineers, and, importantly, not distanced as "just" software engineers, then we are engineers. certainly, we could glom together truly unrelated fields and sets of practices under a label in a way that is not supportable, but at least here, I think it's a rational grouping
@barefootstache @hackernews@die-partei.social article 404's but the answer is, "sometimes". there are "software engineers" who apply the tools of engineering to the creation of software, which I would say is real engineering. some of what we do is crafting components and assembling them, but we also plan, design, test components, do trade studies, characterize defects, etc. Jr engineers may not be doing the whole engineering lifecycle, but that doesn't mean the title misapplied since they are still part of the engineering enterprise.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Mastodon, is in fact, the Fediverse, or as I've recently taken to calling it, the ActivityPub-Fediverse. Mastodon is not a singular network unto itself, but rather a subnetwork of a greater "federated universe" - the Fediverse - realized by thousands of independent, live servers, each running an instance of one of an ensemble of platforms, all of which interoperate via the ActivityPub protocols.
Many Mastodon users surf a particular impression of the Fediverse every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the fraction of the network which is most widely used today is called "Mastodon", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the Fediverse, equally inhabited by users from other non-Mastodon servers.
There really is a Mastodon, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the Fediverse they use. Mastodon is an ActivityPub server for microblogging. Mastodon is an essential part of the Fediverse, but limiting by itself. The Fediverse experience manifests in the context of a complete network. Mastodon distributes content in combination with other ActivityPub servers. The whole network is basically ActivityPub servers with Mastodon being the most common; The so-called "Mastodon network" is really the Fediverse network.
@zpartacoos I think I've seen @izaya post about Vulkan lately, and they post about programming often enough. my follow list has some other folks you may find interesting, though they may not exactly intersect your list.
Mastodon has been feeling kinda dead lately. Each week for the last few months I use it less and less. Why? I don't know. Perhaps the difficulty of finding engaging sub communities?
Anybody know people here who post regularly and are into:

* #Graphics #opengl #vulkan #gamedev
* #machinelearning #pytorch #tensorflow
* #programming in #c #cpp #rust #python #haskell specially those who post about their #foss projects

is it common to have loved ones call/text after they get back to their homes after a visit? there was a woman I was dating who seemed a bit confused when I texted her to take I had made it back. maybe it's just when it's over a long distance, like with a train or plane journey that other folks do that?

I don't get how #Wordle hard mode requires using the same letters you've matched already in subsequent guesses. that's the easy way for me
@trinsec remember, people are lazy. if I can just go to a website and play a game, that's easier than downloading an app. also, you say lingo was big in the 90s: I think I vaguely recall the show, but timing is off for the niche Wordle has as a game people can play in little inbetween times @lydiaconwell
