@freemo I am extremely happy that the boxes I happened to whimsically check when I was signing up, led me to QOTO. This is an excellent explanation.

@ceoln It makes me happy to hear you feel you made the right choice and are happy here in your new home. I look forward to getting to know you.

I have been fooling around with and tooting & tweeting to test the SW.

You can so that the test toots don't mess with other user's feeds by having the posts set to be direct messages to no-one on the Mastodon side. You get to see if it is working without bothering anyone.

If you are recently from the , as I am, it takes awhile to realize you are not shouting into the void here but in conference with others.

And ofc it is also good general to toot tweets as toots rather than most of the time.

On theoretical neural circuits for counting, and their biological implementation in the brain:

"Our second model uses anti-Hebbian plasticity and only tracks frequencies within four count categories (“1-2-3-many”) ... we show that an implementation of the “1-2-3-many” count sketch exists in the insect mushroom body."

@sean ive been trying to find a good answer to this for years.. there arent many options, tikiwiki seems to be the closest. you also have gitlab which has a wiki aspect to itt on a per project basis. Gitlab is nnice because the wiki also exists as a git repo.

feel free to use QOTO's free gitlab instance for your wiki if that is an appropriate solution for you. I dont think it has templating or anything fancy though.

@skobkin Exactly... and prevents them from being able to investigate or be aware of attacks on them that may endanger their lives!

@freemo
Good decision.

Some people just don't understand that forcing server blocks not only protects someone from the "unpleasant" communications, but also prohibits other users from communicating with their peers or finding important information.

@freemo

Thank you, this is a good example of using reason appropriately to pursue noble goals.

Additionally, you've removed the character limit on your instance, making your users responsible for writing posts of the appropriate length instead of imposing a limitation.

This story teaches us that it is not enough to free oneself from the explicit control of central authorities, it is also necessary for everyone to be a responsible person so that the rights of all are respected.

Ironically, many people who implement these blocks are used to calling others "fascists" as a condemnation of authoritarianism.

@post honestly you can post up to the 65K limit and it isnt a huge issue. Basically if your post is long it gets truncated with a "read more" link... so no actual harm is done.

Only way you could abuse it is if you purposely used it to flood the network. But if you do that it will get auto reported and youll get blocked.

I think too that students fear asking questions because they don't want to appear "stupid". In reality other students have the same questions. This is my very first Toot bu the way...

@pandian Many teachers do not instil understanding, only learning facts. Their students cannot reason and take themselves forward and enjoy it.

@lakoma That is very intentional. I started this instance to create a place where people could talk about hard controversial subjects and still be respectful... during the early days it was hard to curate especially given our tenndency to want to talk things out rather than relying on bans for bad actors (though we do have our limits)... now that we have a large established community and that energy is deeply rooted in the community it seems new users appreciate it and carry it on. So in the end, in my bias opinion, we really do have one of the most drama free open, and relaxing communities on the fediverse.

@STORM

Much appreciate the praise, it means a lot to me to know you feel I will do a good job with managing the community interests and make this a place you want to be.

@nullifidian @gpowerf

@lavenderlens It is great to have you. Luckily me and the rest of the community are always happy to help if you have any questions.

@LouisIngenthron Hard to say the impact it has... Who doesnt like a good fart joke though :)
