A reminder for anyone new to mastodon who might not be happy with some of the racist and bad actors out there on other servers... Just import the fediblock list to your personal blocks and you will be safe from the vast majority of bad actors.

Okay this might be a long post :blob_grinning_sweat:

One thing that I realised is making harder for people to switch is because the whole concept can feel daunting & overwhelming for non-tech savvy people.

With Twitter to them it was straight forward and easy to find topics they enjoy but with mastodon its a bit different.
So if you're new to mastodon or you want to introduce someone to mastodon here are some tips, useful sites & tools:
### Tips:
- Choosing a home instance isn't as importance as it seems, don't overthink it. Yes moderation rules & policies may differ but they all have one thing in common: Be a decent human. You **always** have the option to migrate your account to a new instance.
- Toots (or posts if you think toots are cringe :sad_cat:) are what we call micro-blogging instead of tweets
- You’re supposed to "boost" AKA "reblog" toots that you like.Since Mastodon does not have an algorithm that surfaces toots that have been liked a lot, boosting is the best way to help spread stuff that you like, and to show appreciation. (credit to @orsvarn for this comment)
- Another way to fill your timeline with content you enjoy is to: Find other people with similar interests, follow them, favourite their posts, boost their posts, use hashtags. rinse, repeat. (credit to @garry)
- If you ever feel yourself getting sucked into arguments on the , you might want to take advantage of the instance mute/block feature!
Instances tend to foster a culture, so if you find people from a specific site tend to be bothering you, muting/blocking that instance will keep other members of that community from bothering you as well.
- Finally do not share private/sensitive information via DMs on Mastodon. Direct Messages are not E2E. **Keep it in mind**

introduction 👋

I'm a data scientist and machine learning engineer specialised in analyses and ML. My interests include:

Living in Málaga, working remotely for an agency in Madrid
trekking, mountaineering, guitar, writing, coffee

Technology Integration Specialist for the largest independent high school in the United States. It's been a long time since I posted a "hello world" style message to introduce myself!
New to Mastodon, obviously, and looking for my community!

I can see that as part of the migration it seems the done thing to do an .

I am here in a personal capacity.

In both a personal and professional capacity, people seem to like listening to me talk about sustainability policy, which I find truly baffling as it usually ends up in me getting agitated about carbon pricing.

I also spend my time getting agitated about biodiversity and football.

Other keen interests include jazz, brutalist architecture, and futurism, and abstract expressionism in art.

At the rate the current twitter exodus is going I will hit 30,000 followers by the end of the week... Gonna have to celebrate :)

Cool to have a social media that is open source and has a good dev community.

See ya Elon.

Who’d have guessed Elon Musk would pay $44 billion to promote Mastodon.

Woke up to find the twitter exodus **Still** accelerating. The last 24 hours has been the biggest influx yet, up over 20% from yesterday. We are seeing 1000 new users a day now!

Thanks! Will do! And thanks to the whole team.
I have always found when managing/coordinating/being part of teams that accomplishing an objective together feels much more rewarding and is a richer experience than if that goal had been reached alone.
Like the toots here people can boost each other ;)
So again, thanks to you and the rest of the team. You have a lot of reasons to feel good, from what I see here in qoto.org

I mostly used the birdsite for learning, was something I think worked rather well.

That said... By comparing with my (admittedly small, but fresh) home feed here at , during these past few days I have come to realize just how much the birdsite's algorithms were keeping me within rather limited boundaries, even if my tastes and interests have always been the same. has been giving me less noise and more content.

I am hopeful that this new experience might expand my cultural horizons through all of your wonderful collective and collaborative input and feedback!
