Just to give you an idea of how bad the whole "we block anyone who doesnt block who we block" has gotten, someone sent me this:

I would **love** to give M.A a script that goes over all the instances in the fediverse and alerts them of every instance that doesnt follow the exact same block list as them and spit it out. I'm sure they will realize they have to block 99% of the fediverse... its getting laughable at this point.
Let me see if i follow the logic here... The idea is that lots of people need to block an instance to make sure an instance that doesnt block them might not get a message from them before realizing they want to block them?
For starters before I address that directly, is that concern a valid justification to put people of the LGBTQ community in physical danger? I'd say not. I mean onen person sees one message from the server, and then blocked, yes its a shame they had to see it, but is that very minimal edge case worth putting peoples lives in danger.... thats a huge stretch for me.
Keep in mind there are also global block lists they can subscribe to. Things get on fediblock pretty damn fast so if the user uses fediblock locally the chances of that even happening are exceedingly small.
@freemo really enjoying things here
If you want to join us on the QOTO matrix server (A chat room server that is federated like here) then check out this post. IT has some spaces you can join to find some interesting rooms to be a part of, all active rooms.
@freemo Thanks for detailed explanation & history. I'm even happier being on QOTO with that info in hand. This seems like a great community.
So someone messaged me privately and asked how absolute this is.. like would we block an instance calling for genocide. I feel my response is import to reiterate here, so here it is:
Its not just about the authorities, it is about the people whose lives are at risk by that call to genocide having the right to see those posts and use that information to look out for their own safety... If someone is doxed, they should know, if someone is threatened, they should know, and they should be able to take action.
Someone saying violent things online doesnt guarantee some police officer will meander by and take them down. The law only tends to get involved once someone is reported, and sometimes not even then. No one will be reporting a site if no one can see or know it is there.
The question is, if someone is being physically threatened and having their life in jeopardy how are you helping them by blocking the privileges of the **victim** and disallowing the victim the right to see the threat placed against them?
In short, I refuse to take away rights from the victim simply because there is a violent bad actor out there. If the victim doesn't want to see it they simply need to import the block list and the problem is solved for them, so why not keep the power in the victims hands?
Yeah, I can see how you consider it a success. Well done :) It's certainly looking like a place I could call home :)
@nullifidian
@freemo it seems like I accidentally stumbled into the right instance! Also I'm glad there's choice out there for people who want to have massive predetermined block lists because that's how they roll, and I'm glad this choice exists for me.
@freemo I didn't come from Twitter but what drew me to the platform is one of the things driving migrants nuts. I like the servers have their own personalities. I love academics and intelligent banter so I've fallen in love with qoto immediately. Migrants seem to have an awkward adjustment to the idea of destination oriented posts and timelines. I think it's brilliant. But I still owe the migration credit cause I read about it in Reuters.
@freemo I have been here a week and have already seen more positive engagement here than years on Twitter.
@freemo I am extremely happy that the boxes I happened to whimsically check when I was signing up, led me to QOTO. This is an excellent explanation.
I have been fooling around with #crossposting and tooting & tweeting to test the SW.
You can #crosspost #𓅪𐃘𓃰 so that the test toots don't mess with other user's feeds by having the posts set to be direct messages to no-one on the Mastodon side. You get to see if it is working without bothering anyone.
If you are recently from the #TwitterMigration, as I am, it takes awhile to realize you are not shouting into the void here but in conference with others.
And ofc it is also good general #fediverse #etiquette to toot tweets as #unlisted toots rather than #public most of the time.
ATTENTION MATH PEOPLE:
if someone studying ""computer science"" (blasphemous demon) comes up to you and asks if you want to learn about "lambda calculus", DO NOT ENGAGE! I REPEAT, DO NOT ENGAGE!!! this is how they TRICK poor innocent mathematicians into turning towards the DARK SIDE (computer).
it is NOT the calculus you know
it is EVIL
stay AWAY
On theoretical neural circuits for counting, and their biological implementation in the #Drosophila brain:
"Our second model uses anti-Hebbian plasticity and only tracks frequencies within four count categories (“1-2-3-many”) ... we show that an implementation of the “1-2-3-many” count sketch exists in the insect mushroom body."

@freemo
Good decision.
Some people just don't understand that forcing server blocks not only protects someone from the "unpleasant" communications, but also prohibits other users from communicating with their peers or finding important information.
Thank you, this is a good example of using reason appropriately to pursue noble goals.
Additionally, you've removed the character limit on your instance, making your users responsible for writing posts of the appropriate length instead of imposing a limitation.
This story teaches us that it is not enough to free oneself from the explicit control of central authorities, it is also necessary for everyone to be a responsible person so that the rights of all are respected.
Ironically, many people who implement these blocks are used to calling others "fascists" as a condemnation of authoritarianism.
