@thor What about the entry hallway? In those American shows I always see the front door opening immediately into the living room. The American apartments I've been in also were like that, but at least that was from an indoor shared hallway. Not sure about the houses themselves.

There, last batch of laptops arrived on time. Unpacked the whole deal and registered every laptop in an Excel sheet, making an overview which people are left for deployment. We might have 1 or 2 spare, which is good. This way we can ensure everybody can work from home.

@mur2501 We'll be fine. Supermarkets stay open. And I bet we can still order goods online.

@stux

Quite short notice, but we're going to have a hard lockdown this midnight already here in the Netherlands. It's going to last until 19 January. Oh boy.

Time to quickly do last-minute arrangements of laptop deployment so all personnel here will have the means to work from home. We still have tomorrow to arrange things, schools close on wednesday.

@ashleyjohnson Err... two things that pop up in my head:

1) Why would one even want to eat this? I love fries. I love bread. But combining them looks just silly.

2) How do you even fail to make this?!

*Om nom nom* Xmas cookies at job. 😋

*Eats a chocolate chip cookie*

@piggo 😐 Well, wind is going east. So you'll probably get some clouds your way.

Watching Alien Worlds on Netflix now. I think this programme is actually an Earth nature documentary in a sneaky way.

'Here we have <alien species> roaming in the sky. It can be compared to <earth species> and <other earth species>.'

And then you get great videos of both worlds' animals in their alien/natural habitats. Definitely a sneaky Earth nature programme with some alien stuff thrown in to lure people into watching that. It's genius!

@hoppet Swiping. At least I swipe on the phone keyboard, then it almost doesn't matter where you put your finger on the screen so long the motions are right.

We got in quite a situation over in Rohan.

@valleyforge I see those statistics, but you seem to be hung up on comparing to other countries and then result in saying 'See, we spend more, so we're not that bad.'

However, it is not that simple. You spend more, but what is the actual education like? Is it adjusted for modern times? Or are they just 'memorization factories'? Are teachers getting paid their fair share? Or are they just one of many and easily replaced?

Seeing you considered public schools to be a place for just 'memorizing facts', it seems that USA's schools are apparently not that good as they ought to be. You'll have to fund them, but 'throwing money at them' is not going to solve the core essence of the problem. Your statistics clearly demonstrate that.

If you don't mind a bit of a read, this 2018 Guardian article is actually showing nicely what I can't word properly. Including some statistics comparing to other countries, since that seems to be preferred by you. USA spends more money, but somehow isn't miles ahead proportionally.

But you are absolutely right. My country needs to invest more in education. We are slowly heading towards the American model and are starting to see a decline. That is why our teachers were on strike so much the previous year.

@JonathanMBR I kinda wanted to say 'that's pretty good camouflage', but it is a mural? Who made this?

@valleyforge Regarding the downside you mention, that is what I meant with having to fund education. Classes bigger than 15 I consider too big as well.

I did grow up in a public school, and our classes averaged 5. Granted, it was a special school, but I learned a lot. I feel like non-hearing people also deserve to have classes of max 15 pupils.

A good school also doesn't 'let their students memorize' and nothing else. It lets their students think critically so they can get to a logical conclusion on their own.

But again, that requires funding. And USA is sadly not very well known for funding education. I'd say, start funding the basis. Vote for your kids' future. Homeschooling is a symptom, not a solution.

@sean Hey, at least it means you're developing your skills. ;)

@nommon You'll have to explain that one a bit to me, since I'm pretty sure you're not talking about Cochlear Implants and Compact Discs.
