@skyblond Oh it definitely is but the gameplay's good. ;)

@StroomAfwaarts I still had a pager left, but it's not totally reliable. Technically my phone -could- go replace that now...

Finally, my old alarm system's been replaced. Now I've got working flashing lights again to warn me when someone rings the doorbell! That was way overdue!

And while I was at it, I also requested one for my mobile phone, so the lights will flash when my phone receives messages. I'll have to remember to turn that off when I go to bed. ;)
Actually, I might just leave it off altogether, heh.

@abde I would suggest to repost this but then with those keywords in the list hashtagged, so people can find this easier and possibly send you recommendations.

The Fediverse leans heavily on hashtags for finding stuff.

@KoninginMaxima Ik zou zeggen, ga even je volgerslijstje af of er een onderdaan is die het volgen waard is.

@LauLauThom I just would like to interject that if you quote-toot somebody, they won't get notified of it. So if you did mean to interact with them, I'd suggest either using the reply option, or add a mention of the person in your message.

Just thought I'd give a heads up!

@suryo@mas.to
Just post as usual. See the 'Federated' timeline in one of your tabs/links? That's the outside world (basically, all other instances besides the one you're currently on). People'll see your post in there. Every server that's federating with yours (mas.to in this case) will see your post passing by. Anyone can follow you, no matter what server they're on (provided there's no blocking between servers in place of course).

@freemo @EllisCrawford

@abde Exactly. So if you're a celebrity, of course you would have your own site. And you simply utilize said site as verification tool.

Although a celebrity can also host their own Fediverse platform with their domain name, but that's effort they might not want to do.

@suryo@mas.to

Welcome to the federated network that is this Fediverse. :)
Ideally you only need to create one account on one server (which ideally has a community and the moderation style you like).

You can communicate with people from other servers via this network, you only need to give the full username (in my case it is @ trinsec @ qoto.org, without spaces). It's just like email, it doesn't matter who your emailprovider is, you can send them an email regardless!

There are a few exceptions, of course. If a server blocks us, then we can't communicate with that one. Which is a shame, but hey.

As a rule, Qoto doesn't block servers, so we're one of the most connected servers on the Fediverse. Some do block us because of precisely that, but you can't please everybody.

If you're happy on mas.to you don't really need to move over, unless you like the extra features Qoto has to offer, of course (which you can read in the about page of our server).

@freemo @EllisCrawford

@EllisCrawford @suryo@mas.to @freemo Are those 404 errors specifically on qoto.org itself, or on other servers?

I know mastodon.social is getting slammed very hard by new users, it's been slow and nonresponsive regularly. But qoto.org so far seems pretty responsive.

@sergeant@mstdn.social Inderdaad, en dan ook nog tijdlijnvervuiling van mensen die over die mensen klagen! ;)

@suryo@mas.to Mm, I'm not aware of any hitches with qoto.org. If you still get errors, best to contact @freemo .

@EllisCrawford

@abde Indeed, it is just an icon. :)

But if you want to prove you're really who you claim to be, and you've got a site under your control, look at Settings > Appearances, scroll down a bit for verification info. Then you can show on your profile page that you're indeed associated with that site and you are what you claim to be.

@dichotomiker It totally depends on what you want to get out of it. Mastodon has proven to be fairly robust for medium-large communities. Pleroma is great for smaller ones who don't want to waste that many resources just for a few people. Misskey is totally different, you'd have to look it up. But all of them are part of the microblogging family.

And if you want something different, like an Instagram-competitor, look at Pixelfed. YouTube competitor? PeerTube. There are even a few federated blogging platforms.

And if you can code and are not satisfied with what's already around... why not write your own! :D

@dichotomiker That said, if you're going to selfhost an instance which'll only have you, I can recommend Pleroma as that's quicker to set up and lighter on resources.

@dichotomiker Everybody has their own preferences. Pleroma has cool stuff too. And maybe you'd like to take a look at Misskey as well, so many features that Mastodon don't have. There are a few more platforms but they're a bit more obscure.

@dichotomiker Mastodon is just chronological. It doesn't decide which posts are worthy of viewing.

@wood @peterdrake
No, @freemo has explained it to us before in qoto.org/@freemo/1082596116280

The result is that we see more than the ones who block heavily as they also usually get blocked in return.

We don't have that many blocks against us at all. It just draws your attention because mastodon.art is one of the bigger ones and if you're heavily interested in art that might be a bummer.

My suggestion? Create another account elsewhere for art stuff if you want to interact with mastodon.art. Nobody's saying you're restricted to just one account. :)
