@revjameshandley Good luck with your project then! :) I'm curious how it'll pan out!

@revjameshandley Welcome to Qoto!

Oh I hope that the Raspberry Pi can handle this, Mastodon is a very heavy piece of software. ;)

You could look for other microblogging platforms that can federate, might be lighter. Pleroma is very popular for this.

This one is for all the new people on #Mastodon: did you know that the #fediverse has more than just a microblogging replacement? And that they can all interoperate with your Mastodon account?

Check them out!

Facebook replacement: Friendica
Instagram replacement: Pixelfed
YouTube replacement: PeerTube
Spotify replacement: Funkwhale
MeetUp replacement: Mobilizon
Reddit replacement: Lemmy
Podcasting replacement: Castopod
GoodReads replacement: BookWyrm

@freemo

Yeah, there have been a handful of other people wondering with the official app, why things won't work out well.

I always recommend either the web interface, or when still wanting an app, Tusky (or Fedilab) would be fine alternatives but without being able to use the extra features.

@kimura_cl

@freemo

And, ironically, it seems to be the official Mastodon app that is the most problematic.

@kimura_cl

@kimura_cl Some people have reported the official App not working nicely with Qoto.

Qoto is running on a modified Mastodon instance with extra features added (check the About page to see more details).

As a result, some apps won't work nicely with Qoto, and most apps are made for default Mastodon meaning you'll lose out on those extra features.

I'd suggest to use the mobile web interface, and just pin the site to your home screen. The web interface is very very mobile friendly.

If you still would like to use an app, people have reported Tusky to be working fine enough with Qoto. The official apps gave quite a few problems as you can see now.

@dbread Considering the 65k character limit here on Qoto, that phone in the picture might need to be a bit longer than that!

@StroomAfwaarts Oh, refereerde het daarnaar. 😋 Pun semi intended.

I see a lot of people talking about how Mastodon "Feels like the Internet I remember from 20 years ago."

That's no accident. That's Federation. That's UseNet, IRC, Email, Message Boards, etc. What do they all have in common?

Federation: Users congregating around watering holes of common interest, but still being a part of a larger whole.

THIS IS HOW THE INTERNET WAS DESIGNED TO BE. And I am HERE for it.

@davidchow Currently mastodon.social is slammed because of the influx of new users. They closed registrations on their server because the server was barely responding anymore.

Besides, this is a decentralized network, you don't want one server being enormous and a lot of smaller servers. You want various small to large servers.

@PawelK Heh 😋 Where do you get those crazy stories from?!

@Donut Copy the URL of their page in the search bar here and it'll show up within your Mastodon interface.

@savvy It's never too late to start! Welcome to Qoto!

@kemuri The subscribe feature is a Qoto-specific feature, not a general Mastodon thing.

Tip for the new folk:
Often Mastodon’s features work the way they do because it was first populated by people who had been harassed on FB and the Birdsite.

For instance (not sorry), you cannot search Masto for a simple term. Only #hashtags. Say you’re having a private conversation about iguanas. Anti-iguana trolls will not be able to search for “iguanas”, find your conversation, and drop into it to say, “Iguana luvers suck!”

But if you are wanting to connect with new iguana fanciers on Mastodon, slipping an #iguanas hashtag somewhere into your posts will allow people to search for and find them.

@albertcardona No clue, I don't really busy myself with this kind of detail. Probably because they're just words to me that I take at face value.

Maybe you can find something about this on the Mastodon project page? Not sure where it is, maybe github or similar. Might be able to find the info on their site or the documentation links here.
