NOTE: If anyone wants to be added to this list just let me know.

Ok so this seems to be most of the people who publicly stated they had interest in developing the "United Federation of Instances". All of you should have gotten the first draft and opinions were heard and discussed.

Today I will be moving the first draft over to git (either git.qoto.org or gitlab.com). From there I will encourage each of you to provide suggestions as to edits there, and raise discussions in issues. This way we will be public and have an open transparent forum that keeps the changes on record.

While public feedback is being debated on the proposal I will begin a rough draft on the complete by laws (which will try to represent the broader points in the proposal document). That too will be on gitlab and open to discussion

From there as the movement grows we can begin discussing launching it.

I suggest all communication on the fediverse about this use the hashtag so it is easily searchable.

Since this is a public post I will now share the link to the early draft here, please keep in mind everything here is open for discussion so if anyone doesnt like the current direction, please speak up, we want you to be heard.

As Qoto is heating up, I appreciate the amount of activism here, 95% of the time it's well done. Other places, people get emotionally triggered, and drop a forcible opinion with no reinforcement. That's not activism, it's reactivism. That makes me proud to be a member here.

As of the moment it appears 111 **known** instances have defederated to some degree from Mastodon.social. Most likely unknown instance count is much higher.

People are claiming this is a result on the article I wrote, which largely cited facts with photo evidence and effectively accused Eugen of caving to a Nazi's agenda.

I do **not** want to see anyone defederating from mastodon.social. However, my article presented the facts, made no suggestion to anyone to defederate. If those those facts cause people to get mad with Eugen and defederate, so be it, thats his fault for not being a better person, for not having a discussion about his decisions. I wont take blame simply for exposing truths, the reprocusions are on him not me.

The irony is what is happening to him is the same thing happening to me as explained in that article. The difference is what is happening to me is largely fueled by lies which Ive disproven. Cant say the same about Eugen

Anyway, I do hope all of you will stop defederating and start talking. I'd much rather see people try to talk to Eugen and tell him why he is wrong and get him to be better than anything else. Perhaps stand up to the misinformation you hear as well and do some fact checking so doesnt get wrongly accused of lies while your at it.

@marathon0 I object to russia s use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and filtration camps where they exterminate civilians - what’s your favorite thing about genocidal Russia - please tell me

A reminder for anyone new to mastodon who might not be happy with some of the racist and bad actors out there on other servers... Just import the fediblock list to your personal blocks and you will be safe from the vast majority of bad actors.

@freemo

*The existing problem* that I see, was JoinMastodon unilaterally and non transparently turfing QOTO from its list despite QOTO at all times meeting its publicly stated requirements. On top of that, not having any receipts on how and why when questioned. Really is a violation of trust.
And that drastically effects new signup if JoinMastodon is represented as an authoritative list of where new people could go. When it is seemingly more just some guys friends list and is not actually done on its owns stated & advertised criteria.
There are all the public criteria for being on Join Matstadon then there are the double secret reasons
(some servers, in this case QOTO are excluded because :P<blows raspberry>. )

What is thus needed is a replacement for Joinmastodon, or an improvement in JoinMastodon.
One of the improvements might be that each server must tell us (potential new signups) what other servers on that list they block and why. other UI improvements is how to find server that suits the new user would also be possible.

===========================
As for mandating that servers don't block others. NOPE.
It is perfectly true that I have strong expectation that any @member@QOTO is likely basically immune to radicalization. (we've all met stupid a lot of times before, even stupid dressed up in academic clothes.) And given that QOTO so clearly says it doesn't block instances and has csv files to make it easy for individuals to make their own garden walled.
Then yes we, the members of QOTO are just fine with no blocks and we knew that coming in.

I don't agree that generalises to all servers and people. If someone wants to be on a server that clearly defines itself as a walled garden ... then that is not a second class server, its just one delivering things/features that I don't personally want or need. I do however respect that some people may well want or even need that.

I am even more than happy to make sure all new signups that want such a thing know where to find it.

@freemo
Also note while my initial statement above was in the public timeline. And I thought it belonged there.
It really has nothing to do with any proposal, it is me discussing the nature of the universe as I see it.
AKA me doing/living QOTO. (AKA if what I said is wrong smack me, I promise to enjoy learning from it.)

I also value the point (Someone else approx made) of preserving maximal degrees freedom for inter server argy bargy to resolve moderation. Moderation is going to get much harder, for some servers when the purposeful but clever not entirely good faith rules lawyers turn up (and start toeing lines in bad faith), and then bush lawyers any set rules we have against us. High functioning Stem severs may be up for that, I suspect the rest of the fediverse will enforce, Wheatons law, more by gut feels. I don't want any 'rules' in their way. The issue is the sign up list, and perhaps(?) secret block lists, so none know how much or little they signed up for.

I am also willing to participate in any closed forum, know how not to, drama drama.
but in all likelyhood will always have my own opinion. I rarely reach just the same conclusions on such topics as anyone else, but frequently decide there are no hills worth dying on.

@freemo why not just publish the draft first and have the discussion in the open? I would think you could generate more interest that way.

Have you reached out to other instance admin about this?

I feel like this could result in some negative unintended consequences. De-federation, and the social threat of de-federation is the main tool to apply pressure to instance admins that are not sufficiently moderating their community.
This seems it would make that process harder.

I am gathering a list of people who want to be involved in the discussion around the formation of a "United Federation of Instances" which is an attempt to combat the fracturing of the fediverse and the general spreading of misinformation WRT moderation decisions.

If anyone is interested in being a part of it let me know in the replies. I will add you to the list, share the draft proposal, and we can start discussions. I have several people already interested.

Apparently slashgear has also mentioned us.... seems we are in quite a bit of news lately.

CNet news has mentioned QOTO https://www.cnet.com/news/social-media/i-want-to-like-mastodon-the-decentralized-network-isnt-making-that-easy/ #QOTO...

TIL QOTO is the Somali word for "deep"... seems appropriate.

@frayoshi

That's just nuts. As I mentioned elsewhere, I'm glad I started just before all this instead of starting at one of these others, coming across it, asking questions, then getting myself banned and having to tell @freemo, "This is all your fault, you jerk! May I join your instance please?"

ER... Please don't ban me for saying that, @freemo... I'm just kidding, kinda? 😉

Actually I'd pass it on in good humor and be polite about the transfer, but just as I tease my wife about shooting me in the back (accidentally) on Minecraft, I'd never stop ribbing him about getting me banned.

Hey, your opportunity!

Apparently from what im hearing from people im filling up the conversation on entire local feeds... fun.

So if the whole argument is that being able to see radicalized propaganda will make people radicalized, and thus is wrong to allow people to see it... does that work both ways.. If you are "radicalized" towards good and taking doing and treating people good to an extreme, then shouldnt the bad radicalized people turn into good radicalized people by that same exposure to good?

The logic doesnt really add up for me, but regardless this is not the reason why we have open federation as many of you know, but it does show a flaw in their logic.

@freemo I have some empathy for the situation Eugen finds himself in, but caving to Nazis is never a good idea (not to mention, never the ethical choice).

I do like it here on Mastodon, but the huge influx of people from Twitter means there are far fewer image descriptions than from even a couple of weeks ago. I’d love to tell every one of them about this, but quite frankly there are so many I don’t have the patience. I’d dearly love it if apps could block posts unless an image description was added to every photo, but I suppose that’s too much to hope for. I’m feeling really excluded from so many conversations. It’s getting as bad as Twitter.
