@spenney Just a heads up that a quote-toot isn't the same as actually responding to the person. It's making a first post (breaking any threads) and adding your comment/opinion to the quoted toot. The quoted person also doesn't get notified (unless you mention them in your comment).

@spenney Mastodon is heavily hashtag-driven for discoverability, so yeah that'd be the way to go.

@daviding @JimSpohrer That is correct, mastodon.social got slammed hard with new users. It is highly encouraged to find a smaller community suiting your needs. This way your local timeline might be more to your liking as well as mastodon.social is a 'general topics' instance.

Subscribing allows you to follow a user without letting them know you're following them and without them needing to approve you if their account is locked down.
The downside is that you'll only be able to see their public posts. Kinda as if you subscribed to their RSS feed.

@kefir It happens, nothing new. I've had my time on a dying instance too (hardware failure, nothing was recovered) and simply moved on. For most people it's just social media, you shouldn't base your life on it.

For organizations, companies, etc, they're best off hosting their own server instead with their own domain, and where only their employees can have an account.

@vielbein Yes. Though some other instances might cache the posts from that instance, but that's not a guarantee.

I was on mastodon.host until it broke down. Everything's gone and I simply continued on Qoto.org.

If you want to have everything in control, you can start your own instance and manage your own posts and create your own backups.

In fact, it'd be great if organizations would host their own instances and have their employees on there (and be automatically verified because only employees can belong to that instance's domain).

That way the organization would ensure that they will never go down and never let the information get lost.

That's the power of federation.
