@dimi
Yes, their Freedom app is payware.

But I'm talking about Limit, their free browser plugin. :) That's also listed on their site.

@dimi I don't see any subscription model for the plugin itself, so I'm not sure what you're talking about.

Limit - Set Limits for Distracting Sites.

Chrome-based plugin.

I... can recommend it. :P

And I have 9 minutes left on this social media. 😋 I guess I'll check briefly again this evening!

@Yul It would be something you'd not see anymore since it's shut down. But the themes using the ticker service would still slow you down as they try to connect to there without results.
It used to show colorful instance names so you could easily tell people apart from various instances.
The easiest solution to solve this is to change your theme to something that doesn't have 'ticker' in its name.

@sandyIRL You can skip those essays! I know! It's a miracle! 😋

@MatousPikous Yeah, do they all come from the same domain? Just block that domain.
Otherwise go to the settings and use the filters if they happen to share the same wording.

@Yul
I don't know, it's pretty fast for me.

Maybe you use a theme with tickers in it? I'd suggest to switch to a theme without tickers in that case, as the ticker service is down and slows down the whole experience.

@DoctorRinny Be sure to share your findings. I wouldn't mind a clone to do the chores for me.

Wat ik heb gelezen is: 'Tradition is peer pressure from the dead.'

Vond ik wel treffend. ;)

@MicroSFF
Ah well. You moving to a smaller instance increases the chance of me not being able to follow you anymore.
The smaller the instance, the more ridiculous the politics and the bigger the chance that my instance's blocked. :(
Good luck with your choice though!

@slider7420
😢 Oh that sucks so bad, I really hope he'll get better soon. Nothing worse than worrying about a loved one.

Some advice I have seen (which you may find useful):

* post about things that interest you, and include hashtags (for instance "birdwatching")
* boost posts that you find interesting from others - while there is no algorithm which those actions drive, it fosters connections as well
* spend some quality time finding people to follow - I love reading a variety of science topics, and I found a list of science journalists to follow on Reddit

On that last point, doing a more general web search to find mastodon users with whom you share interests is probably better than trying to find them on Mastodon itself.

the thing about mastodon is that i don’t even know what i’m supposed to post here. it’s the same but it feels so different

Reminder to new folks here, like my good friends @foxesafloat .

Write an introduction, use the introduction hashtag, plenty of people follow it, you'll get some nice boosts and engagement from it.

There is no computer feeding you what it thinks you'll like, you need to engage with people and people need to engage with you. So fill up your feed by following some folks.

Search doesn't work unless you use hashtags, people can't find you, so make sure you use hashtags all over the place.

Because there's no machine to boost posts, make sure you Boost(retweet from the old world) to share the tweets you like with others. A favourite over here will show the user who wrote the toot you liked it but do nothing for their engagement with others so help them out with a boost.

If you're posting stuff that others might not want to see, like my habit of terrible political hot takes, use the CW button to hide the post behind a content warning.

There's far better guides that this kicking around, but if you're new here, this is a good starter for 10.

Welcome to a more relaxed, better engaged environment.

@admitsWrongIfProven I'm sure he'll get around to it soon.

*Looks at watch*
Yeah, just 11 days left... yeah he'll be fine.
