I think one thing that bothers me a lot with anything tech related is that while, yes, a lot of things can definitely have improved UX that is more user friendly, a lot of other things already have great UX that has been polished for years but gets a lot of undeserved criticism simply for being different from the status quo and/or requiring even the smallest amount of learning or effort

and I honestly entirely blame corporations that over the last 20 years have done everything to create walled gardens with the promise of "we do everything for you, if you have to think while using a computer that means it's bad"
and it's terrifying how well that worked on so so so many people

sometimes things just require you to sit down for half an hour, read something, learn something, try something you're not used to. that's normal. that is simply how anything even remotely advanced has worked for the thousands of years. you don't pick up an electric drill and throw a tantrum because it doesn't work exactly like a screwdriver. computers are a tool that let you do things, and just like any other tool, may require putting at least the smallest amount of effort into learning something

it's honestly frustrating how normalized "nuh uh i got adopted by [corporation's walled garden] and this is where i live for the rest of my life. anything even slightly different is just bad. why would I ever consider anything else, that's effort and effort is bad" has become

I understand that habits can be very strong, and I get it, adjusting to new things takes time, but it's not the end of the world. "more complex" doesn't necessarily mean "worse", it just means you would need to learn and adjust. teaching math at school doesn't stop at pre-algebra, it goes all the way to trigonometry and calculus because there's a good reason for it to be more complicated than the basics. learn something new, it's good for you.

I think I'm way too busy with all the stuff AROUND gaming than the actual gaming itself. Especially when those games have mods and I feel the need to meticulously make a list somewhere with all the features of those mods and what I could do with them.

Yeah, ultimately I do nothing with them because I'm too busy making those lists! 😋

Just amazing.

This is good, crazy good if you ask me!

The four stages of Mastodon user:
* what’s a Mastodon
* I feel lost and alone how does this work
* oh wow this is actually pretty cool
* I’m an instance admin now

I've been on here for a while, but hey, since there's an influx of users that might still see the original instance
Greetings, fellow Mastodorks! I am Anatoly Shashkin, the DOS guy. I mainly talk about stuff related to IBM PC and MS-DOS gaming. Tell me about your DOS memories or recent DOS escapades. 💾

By the way, if you are starting up your own fediverse server, it may be tempting to blindly copy someone else’s block list, but some corners of the fediverse have been a bit over eager with full instance bans, in my opinion, which tends to break the whole federation model (imagine if you couldn’t email anyone with a certain university’s email domain because your email provider disagrees with the university policies).

If an instance is putting a lot of irritating stuff in your server’s global timeline, it might be better to just mute them from the global timeline.

Also sollte es heute mal in Richtung Stadt gehen.

For some reason during this exodus, at least as far as QOTO is concerned, I've noticed a very large portion of people coming in are women scientists. Sadly women seem to be a minority representation in STEM, so seeing this makes me happy as I think women bring a lot to STEM communities.

That said, I am left curious why... what about this exodus has more women in STEM migrating than usual.. Is musk in some way seen as more abrasive to women than he is to men?

The resplendent quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno) is a small bird found in Central America. Males grow ostentatious tail feathers during mating season, that can reach up to one meter in length. Quetzal birds were considered sacred by the Aztecs and Incas, serving as a template for gods like Quetzalcoatl.
Or in short: They are very pretty to look at :ablobhype:

One of the nicest things about Mastodon so far is having a very scientific and academia focused feed where I can discover and follow those working in fields where I don't have a background.

It is wonderful for seeing the diversity of research and being inspired by the works of others.

I have stumbled on this link:
axbom.com/mastodon-tips/

This actually contains very good tips about and the . It might answer a fair amount of questions as well.

Ok, Mastadon is officially a lot more awesome than I had realised. There's a federated server for everyone who's really into bitcoin, and, yes, it is full of people who are as awful as you can imagine. But, with one click, you can block the entire domain! 12.8k thousand crypto weirdos filtered out in a click. Amazing.

A plea to use birdsite CWs more

Gentle reminder to please add CWs when discussing twitter or elon musk. A lot of us came from there recently, and the downfall of our previous social space weighs heavy on our minds, but a lot of folks around here have been around longer than us, and have no interest in hearing the latest insane cruel thing the big man-baby did.

Also aside from that... A social network whose only topic is discussing another social network is not healthy. I get it, it's current news and feels like an important internet moment, but at some point we should thank twitter for the memories, let it go, and talk about things that excite us, make us happy, and generally make this a better place than the one we just left.

: IT’S COMPLICATED.

(And that’s why smaller, independent, decentralised servers — like those running — have a much better chance at striking the right balance and keeping their users happy!)

Will people talk to you if you join the Fediverse? Does Twitter kill Mastodon when it comes to interactions?

Let's do a comparison. I crossposted the same message to Twitter and Mastodon.

Twitter: 1 like
Mastodon: 112 boosts, 257 likes

I love living at walking distance from everything important.

And if it is not walking distance, then at worst biking distance.

You may be aware that there is something called the #Fediverse.

But do you know about all the different types of applications that run on the Fediverse?

I made this visual to give myself and others something to point at when explaining "the big picture".

You may be surprised by how many services beyond Mastodon there are to explore.

Download it for free here and use as you please:

That post also has links to all the different applications.
