A great mathematician legend from Bihar who worked for NASA in landing of first man on moon and also achieved breakthrough in mathematics died yesterday. Suffering from schizophrenia he left academics and returned to his village Bhojpur. No one was there to look after him. He just solve problems regularly and used to teach some poor kids. Although living in poor conditions, he never complained. No one came from any authority to atleast check on him.It just feels like he had been used and thrown . He died lying on a stretcher outside hospital. No ambulance or any service was provided by government . This is truly nadir of our society.
May his soul rest in peace. A true inspiration- Vashishtha Narayan singh

For todays I'm going to do something a bit different. We have a lot of new users, one of the biggest surges we have seen in a while. As such a lot of new users are looking for high quality, long-standing, accounts to follow. Similarly many of the new users need some help getting attention and making new friends.

As such I am going to do this in a few parts. One for old users I have mentioned in previous posts, as well as some of the new users who have been making quality posts and been active for at least a week now. Hopefully this will be more helpful.

Also a section for some bots might be useful.

I will use a persons profile description here as I dont want to misrepresent anyone.

An amazing #datavisualisation about food. What kind of foods are unhealthy, and what kind of foods have a big environmental impact?

From the paper: "Multiple health and environmental impacts of foods" by Michael A Clark, Marco Springmann, Jason Hill, and David Tilman (pnas.org/content/116/46/23357)

Okay, here is one before the weekend.

Conway's Game of Life. It is a simple concept. Set up some cool patterns and let it run on a good cycle. I just did it, using '*' and ' ' but feel free to do it graphically if you prefer. Here are the rules, and my code is in the same repo so let that be a spoiler warning:

I sometimes think, Thanos was so damn right.
I've been using anti pollution mask ever since Diwali but i don't see people around me using them except kids who got the masks from govt and some other health sensitive people.
People are so ignorant about these stuffs. My uncle said, " nothing is happening, you kids read anything and start this craze, look, no one is dying"

long post

@qoto I hope the previous post made sense? It was already in fact Boosted and distributed to that usergroup (which could contain any number of users), everyone following it will get notified and see it. Cool.

- Oh, I want a Private group! 😄 Maybe in the future extra features will be added. For now, want a sec group? CREATE IT and DON'T tell anyone other than the intended users. Keep it hush hush and you get some privacy,

(I think; it might show up on the local feed possibly? This is all new to me too, here trying to explain it to you)

How About Creating a NEW Group?

- reading that same screen above (again, it's located at : gup.pe/u/guppegroups )
we see a reference to :

"Create other groups by searching for or tagging @yourGroupName"

OK - so say we want a new qoto-bikers group. We are all cyclists, and plan some rides, or maybe it's a motorbike group. Let's make it happen!

- What group name? You decide. Keep it Simple. Short. Memorable. Obvious if you can!

ok, how about qoto-bikers? 😄

Sure!

- This will be done from inside you own Home -- your own instance, in my case, this is qoto.org.

- We enter the new Group name we decided on into the SEARCH box, on the top Left corner of the web page (or in the search box in your mobile app)

On the screen below you can see the NEW @group_name@instance_name already typed in. Hit enter and it goes to work!

Will show the result in the next post.

long post

If you open that link, you will land on a new tab and page, with some cryptic instructions (will explain then soon) and an input box.

What to do here?

- if you wanted to JOIN an EXISTING group, say QOTO's (which I created a few minutes ago), you would need to know the Group_name@Instance.name to enter it there. On my example, it would be : qoto@gup.pe

- Done that? It will redirect you to a page, where you will see the Group Bot profile. Click on the "FOLLOW"button, and you will be ADDED to this particular group.

- Any posts made anywhere in fediverse afterwards, and that include the @qoto attibution (username) will be Copied to the Bot there.

And the bot will Boost and send it out to ALL the people Following this particular list. 😄

Screenshot below shows this first entry point into Guppe. (I will describe How To Create a New Group on next post)

** Things I would like to see in Fediverse and Mastodon:

- When Boosting a post, the option to add a note or comment at the top (like it's possible when retweeting)

- When people reply to a thread, that all people who posted on it so far got notified; sometimes threads branch off by posters removing attributions or replying only to one poster. It would be more productive if all saw it, imo.

- in a more distant future, the amount of content will be so large that it will be hard to follow on chronological timelines, all posts into one big humongous Feed. (think Facebook?)

Hashtags alone are not much of a separation, although they might helpf find something. Ideally, I would think something like the usenet newsgroups would tidy things up nicer.

- If people understood that hashtags are not Cutesy decorations and did not abuse them like is common in certain (insta) places, Searching with Useful hashes would be sped up.

All those words marked one by one with hashes are typically K Kardashian style, very gauche imo.

1,100 new users and the hype is slowing down, only about 50 new users a day now.

What a week!

Sinterklaus is coming to the Netherlands in less than a week!!!! Sooo excited it will be my first time.

Interesting little fact. I contributed, for free, a photograph of some Menthol I extracted in my lab for display at the Royal Botanical Gardens. You can see my name next to the picture at the exhibit (attached).

Also need few more suggestions:

1. Web Comics
2. Darwin awards videos
3. Funny stuff

Hello Fediverse dwellers, please suggest handles(profiles) that toot about:

1. Nature
2. Veganism
3. Vegan food recipes
4. Superbikes
5. Animals

I want to follow such handles.

In dinner, I am having 'Dal Pitha' . It is a traditional dish from Bihar, India. Ever since my childhood, it has been a part of my life even though i never once got to live in Bihar except for 1-2 weeks.

Made from rice flour filled with spicy lentils, boiled in water and then can be fried in oil or clarified butter. Some like to eat boiled ones, some prefer fried ones but both ways, they taste so great.

Hope you're having a great day/night.

Tried a bit of a food experiment today. Tried to make a sort of fried rice style dish, no actual rice. Its made with fried chunks of scrapple/balkenbrij, chopped up cauliflower, chicory, soy sauce, turmeric, hot curry, msg, and some fresh grown hot peppers.

It turned out surprisingly good.

I've also imported the Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Urdu and other new translations from Crowdin. If you would like to see those translations completed, you can contribute here:

crowdin.com/project/mastodon

Please look at that page before asking for new languages to be added! They are probably already there!!

So far we only have a single moderator nomination. Look like @mngrif might get mod status uncontested :)
